crystal map i: music
The Codex can be used to map music. Hydrogen gives the ground state, C# becomes Light, intervals become Links, and scales become Elemental fields; chords become small Elemental architectures.
A First Crystal Map
The Codex can be used to map music.
I do not know music theory very well, and I did not know it when writing the Codex. The Codex did not begin as a music theory system. It began as Crystal Vision: twelve Elementals, directionality, Facets, Links, and the assumption that reality can be simplified into a base-12 lens without pretending that the lens is reality itself.
This post is written for any reader -- no need to know music theory or science. It is recommanded you understand the Codex and Crystal Vision.
I will mostly speak from a Western music perspective, specifically the twelve-note chromatic system used in most modern Western music.
Sound Basics
Sound is vibration moving through a medium. In air, this means pressure waves. A note has a frequency, measured in hertz, which means cycles per second. A higher frequency sounds like a higher pitch. A lower frequency sounds like a lower pitch.
In music, the most important relationship is often not the absolute frequency of a note, but the interval between notes. An interval is the distance between two pitches. If one note vibrates twice as fast as another, we hear the same note-class one octave higher. If one note vibrates half as fast, we hear the same note-class one octave lower.
This is why notes repeat. C is still C when it appears higher or lower. A is still A. C# is still C#. The octave is a loop.
Western twelve-tone equal temperament divides the octave into twelve equal steps called semitones. After twelve semitones, you arrive at the same note-class again, one octave higher or lower. That is already very Codex. A circle. Twelve thresholds. Twelve steps. Return.
A key is the note that feels like home. A scale is the set of notes chosen around that home. If the key is C#, then C# is the centre of gravity, and the other notes become relationships to that centre.
The Codex calls the key note the Subject and the rest become its Objects.
Ground State: Hydrogen
The first thing I mapped was the base note.
In Western music, C often feels like the clean starting point because C major has no sharps or flats on the piano. It uses only the white keys. But there is no true universal reason that music must begin with C. Any note can become home if the song treats it as home.
The Codex aims for something more universal than tradition. So I asked: if music needs a ground state, what is the most universal frequency I can find?
Knowing chemistry, I immediately thought of hydrogen.
Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the Universe. It is the first atom, the simplest atom, and the building block from which heavier elements emerge through stars. Hydrogen is what makes stars shine. If the Codex needs a musical Light, hydrogen is a very good place to begin.
Hydrogen itself is an atom; it does not have one single sound-frequency in the ordinary musical sense. However, atoms can be excited. When an atom absorbs energy, its electron can jump to a higher energy state. When the electron falls back down, the atom releases energy as a photon, a particle-wave of light.
For this map, I chose the hydrogen Lyman-alpha frequency. It is the photon emitted when hydrogen falls from the first excited state back to the ground state. It is one of the most basic and famous frequencies associated with hydrogen. The frequency is extremely high: about 2.46607 × 1015 Hz. We do not hear this as sound. It is ultraviolet light.
So, no, we are not literally hearing hydrogen. Ultraviolet light and air-vibration sound are different physical phenomena. I am not pretending a photon is secretly a flute. What we can do is octave-fold the frequency down into the human hearing range. We repeatedly divide the frequency by two until it lands in the range of audible pitch.
280.36 Hz ≈ C#4 when A4 ≈ 445.04 Hz
Humans can generally hear up to around 20,000 Hz when young, and this decreases with age. After enough octave divisions, Lyman-alpha lands close to C#. To make it land exactly on C#4, we tune A4 to around 445 Hz instead of the usual 440 Hz.
A4 = 440 Hz is the common reference pitch today. But not all orchestras tune exactly to 440. Some already tune higher. So 445 Hz is not alien. It is simply a slightly brighter tuning, and in this map it lets hydrogen become C#.
| Step | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrogen line | Lyman-alpha | Hydrogen falling from the first excited state back to the ground state. |
| Frequency | ≈ 2.46607 × 1015 Hz | Ultraviolet light, far above human hearing. |
| Octave-fold | ÷ 243 | Repeatedly halve the frequency until it enters the audible range. |
| Audible analogue | ≈ 280.36 Hz | Very close to C#4 under a slightly high concert tuning. |
| Required tuning | A4 ≈ 445.04 Hz | The tuning that makes hydrogen-folded Light land exactly on C#. |
Directionality
We usually imagine notes moving from low to high. We climb the scale. We go upward. Frequency of A is lower than B, B is lower than C, and so on.
But if we remember the directionality assumption of the Codex and Crystal Vision, we need to think differently.
The Codex reads the Universe as moving from low entropy to high entropy, from pure beginning toward complex exhaustion, from hot to cold, from small to large, from light to dark. In strict physics, a musical note does not simply “have entropy” like a gas in a box. But as a Crystal Vision analogy, the direction is clear enough to work with.
The early Universe was extremely hot, dense, energetic, and full of high-frequency radiation. As the Universe expands, light stretches and shifts toward lower frequencies. Old photons become redder, colder, wider. Even in biology, a similar pattern appears: smaller animals often make and hear higher frequencies, while larger animals tend toward lower ones. Children often begin with higher voices and grow lower with age.
So, in Codex terms, we do not move from low notes to high notes.
We move from high notes to low notes.
C# becomes the ground state of Light, and the Elemental circle descends from there.
The Elemental Note Map
Once hydrogen gives us C#, the rest of the chromatic circle can unfold from Light in Codex direction. Each step downward by one semitone moves one Elemental forward.
This gives us the first Crystal Map of Music:
| Elemental | Name | Texture | Temperature | Note | Musical image |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| E1 | Light | Radiant | Prime | C# | Hydrogen-folded ground state. First illumination. |
| E2 | Stone | Dense | Constant | C | First weight. The note just below Light. |
| E3 | Eye-1 | Loose | Terminal | B | Beauty. The message opens. |
| E4 | Water | Strange | Prime | A# | Emotional. Love. |
| E5 | Fire | Radiant | Constant | A | Heat, desire, movement, Red. |
| E6 | Earth | Dense | Terminal | G# | Working intelligence. Useful structure. |
| E7 | Eye-2 | Loose | Prime | G | Peace, Idea, Compass, flat horizon. |
| E8 | Ice | Strange | Constant | F# | Trap, crystal, cave, hidden pressure. |
| E9 | Gold | Radiant | Terminal | F | Wisdom, city, storm, consequence. |
| E10 | Dust | Dense | Prime | E | Order, pyramid, inheritance, world-form. |
| E11 | Eye-3 | Loose | Constant | D# | Vision, Air Current, sudden sight. |
| E12 | Void | Strange | Terminal | D | Threshold, mist, ghost, completion. |
This means C# is not chosen because it is prettier than the other notes. It is chosen because hydrogen-folded Light gives it a universal anchor. After that, the Codex does what the Codex does best: it folds the circle.
Links as Intervals
Once the Elementals are mapped to notes, musical intervals can be mapped to Elemental Links.
In music, an interval is the distance between two notes. In the Codex, a Link is the relationship between two Elementals. These are almost begging to be placed on top of each other.
If C# is the Subject, then the other notes become Objects. Moving forward in Codex direction means moving downward by semitone steps.
| Semitones | Object note | Link | Downward interval | Codex feeling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | C# | Fusion | Unison / octave | The thing meets itself. No subject-object tension. |
| -1 | C | Forward Junction | Major 7th | Close contact, friction, rubbing, pressure. |
| -2 | B | Forward Reflection | Minor 7th | Call-and-answer, a quick mirror, a step of perception. |
| -3 | A# | Forward Embrace | Major 6th | A shared Temperature. The Subject wraps around the Object. |
| -4 | A | Forward Catalyst | Minor 6th | A shared Texture. Growth, ignition, reproduction of pattern. |
| -5 | G# | Forward Capture | Perfect 5th | Distant control, penetration, intelligence from the blind spot. |
| -6 | G | Alignment | Tritone | Opposites on one line. Exact balance, but not easy comfort. |
| -7 | F# | Reverse Capture | Perfect 4th | The same deep axis from the other side. Capture returns. |
| -8 | F | Reverse Catalyst | Major 3rd | The Object seems to catalyse the Subject from behind. |
| -9 | E | Reverse Embrace | Minor 3rd | The Subject bathes in what it thought it was holding. |
| -10 | D# | Reverse Reflection | Major 2nd | The mirror stands behind you. Strange distance, still visible. |
| -11 | D | Reverse Junction | Minor 2nd | Almost home, almost unbearable. The neighbour from behind. |
| -12 | C# | Fusion | Octave | Return. The circle closes and opens again. |
To my surprise, the intervals that music treats as especially stable and “nice” are the Captures. Perfect fourths and fifths sit on the Capture axis. Apparently we like our music intelligent and penetrating. Music is a little bit of a sexy nerd thing.
Conversely, Alignment gives us the tritone: the interval that cuts the octave exactly in half and sounds famously unstable to Western ears. This is also very Codex. Eye-2, Peace, true balance — it is not as soft as people think. Peace is hard on our ears because true balance is difficult.
Alignment does not mean comfort. Alignment means the two sides stand on the same line.
Keys and Scales
In Western music, most songs have a key and a scale. The key determines the home note: the centre around which the song seems to move. The scale determines which notes are allowed to gather around that home.
In the Codex, I treat the key of a song as the Subject. The other notes in the song become Objects of the Links. This means a melody is not just moving through notes. It is moving through relationships.
The two most common scale families today are major and minor. Very broadly, major often sounds happy, bright, open, or stable. Minor often sounds sad, dark, serious, or intense. These labels are crude. You can absolutely have a sad song in major, and a heroic song in minor. Still, the broad emotional difference is real enough that most people can hear it.
Let us take C# as the key, because C# is our E1 in this map. Listed in Codex direction, the major and minor scales become:
| Scale | Elementals | Notes | Codex reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Major | E1 · E2 · E4 · E6 · E8 · E9 · E11 | C# · C · A# · G# · F# · F · D# | Light · Stone · Water · Earth · Ice · Gold · Eye-3. Bright, structured, emotional, workable, visionary. |
| Minor | E1 · E3 · E5 · E6 · E8 · E10 · E11 | C# · B · A · G# · F# · E · D# | Light · Eye-1 · Fire · Earth · Ice · Dust · Eye-3. More charged, bodily, ordered, intense, and inward. |
This already shows why the map is more than cute.
Major contains Stone, Water, Gold. Minor contains Eye-1, Fire, Dust. One has more stable brightness and emotional flow. The other has more perception, heat, and structure. This does not explain every song. Obviously. A song is higher resolution than a scale. Rhythm, harmony, timbre, lyrics, performance, culture, memory, and listener all matter.
But the Elemental field is there.
The Brightness Axis of the Modes
The next thing surprised me even more.
Western music has seven common modes derived from the major scale: Lydian, Ionian, Mixolydian, Dorian, Aeolian, Phrygian, and Locrian. Music people often order them from brightest to darkest. Lydian feels very bright, floating, almost too open. Locrian feels unstable, dark, and difficult to use.
If we map each mode through the Codex, then add the Elemental numbers inside the scale, something very elegant happens. The sums line up with the traditional brightness order.
| Mode | Elementals | Sum | Common feel | Codex note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lydian | E1 · E2 · E4 · E6 · E7 · E9 · E11 | 40 | Brightest, floating, almost too open | Major with Ice replaced by Peace. Almost too good to be true. |
| Ionian / Major | E1 · E2 · E4 · E6 · E8 · E9 · E11 | 41 | Bright, stable, familiar | The common bright field: Stone, Water, Earth, Ice, Gold, Vision. |
| Mixolydian | E1 · E3 · E4 · E6 · E8 · E9 · E11 | 42 | Playful, looser, blues | Stone becomes Eye-1. The field opens into perception. |
| Dorian | E1 · E3 · E4 · E6 · E8 · E10 · E11 | 43 | Balanced minor, cool, flexible | Gold becomes Dust. Wisdom turns into structure. |
| Aeolian / Minor | E1 · E3 · E5 · E6 · E8 · E10 · E11 | 44 | Natural minor, darker, serious | Water becomes Fire. Emotion intensifies into Red. |
| Phrygian | E1 · E3 · E5 · E6 · E8 · E10 · E12 | 45 | Dark, tense, ancient, sharp-edged | Eye-3 becomes Void. Vision crosses the threshold. |
| Locrian | E1 · E3 · E5 · E7 · E8 · E10 · E12 | 46 | Darkest, unstable, hard to settle | Minor loses Earth for Peace and Eye-3 for Void. No wonder it trembles. |
This is where the map really starts to work, baby.
Lydian is the brightest because it replaces Ice with Eye-2: Peace, Idea, Compass, flat horizon. Locrian becomes the most entropic because it takes the minor field and swaps Earth for Eye-2, and Eye-3 for Void. It loses coherent intelligence and visionary air at the same time.
We can call the sum a kind of total entropy inside the scale. The further the scale moves around the Elemental circle, the darker, stranger, and more unstable it tends to feel.
This overlaps beautifully with how musicians already describe these modes.
Chords as Elemental Architectures
Chords deserve more than a sidenote.
For non-musicians: a chord is what happens when several notes sound at the same time.
The simplest Western chords are triads. A triad usually has three notes: a root, a third, and a fifth. The root is the home of the chord. The third often tells the ear whether the chord feels major or minor. The fifth gives the chord its spine. Imagine a chord as a tiny architecture built around one central note.
In this map I use C# as the root, because C# is Light.
| Chord | Notes | Elementals | Root Links | Codex reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C# major | C#FG# | E1 Light · E9 Gold · E6 Earth | Fusion · Reverse Catalyst · Forward Capture | Light held by Gold and Earth. Bright, useful, confident; a small solar architecture. |
| C# minor | C#EG# | E1 Light · E10 Dust · E6 Earth | Fusion · Reverse Embrace · Forward Capture | Light with Dust and Earth. More inward, ordered, serious, grounded, and human. |
| C# diminished | C#EG | E1 Light · E10 Dust · E7 Eye-2 | Fusion · Reverse Embrace · Alignment | Light stretched through Dust into Peace. Unstable because true balance enters before the structure can rest. |
| C# augmented | C#FA | E1 Light · E9 Gold · E5 Fire | Fusion · Reverse Catalyst · Forward Catalyst | The Radiant triangle: Light, Fire, Gold. The chord shines too evenly, too intensely, almost without ground. |
| C#sus2 | C#D#G# | E1 Light · E11 Eye-3 · E6 Earth | Fusion · Reverse Reflection · Forward Capture | A suspended chord of Vision and Earth. It refuses the third and waits in a more open air. |
| C#sus4 | C#F#G# | E1 Light · E8 Ice · E6 Earth | Fusion · Reverse Capture · Forward Capture | Light caught between both Captures. Held, hovering, unresolved, powerful in a quiet way. |
Major and minor are not simply happy and sad. The Codex makes that too small. Major carries Gold where minor carries Dust. Major shines through wisdom and consequence. Minor folds into order, memory, and structure.
And then the stranger chords start answering back.
Augmented = Radiant triangle
C# · F · A maps to Light, Gold, and Fire: E1, E9, and E5. All three are Radiant. It is the Catalyst triangle shining in one chord.
Diminished seventh = Prime square
C# · E · G · A# maps to E1, E10, E7, and E4. All four are Prime. The chord becomes a square of beginnings.
Sus4 = double Capture
C# · F# · G# places Light between Ice and Earth. Both are Capture Links from the root.
This is the moment where the map stops being only pretty and starts becoming useful. The augmented triad is famously symmetrical in music theory; in the Codex, it becomes the Radiant Catalyst loop of Light, Fire, and Gold. The diminished seventh is also symmetrical; in the Codex, it completes the Prime square of Light, Water, Peace, and Dust. Different languages, same door opening.
| Chord | Notes | Elementals | Added colour | Codex reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| C#maj7 | C#FG#C | E1 Light · E9 Gold · E6 Earth · E2 Stone | Stone | Major architecture with Stone close to return. Beautiful, stable, but with a delicate almost-home tension. |
| C#7 | C#FG#B | E1 Light · E9 Gold · E6 Earth · E3 Eye-1 | Eye-1 | Major architecture with perception added. It wants to speak, move, point, resolve. |
| C#m7 | C#EG#B | E1 Light · E10 Dust · E6 Earth · E3 Eye-1 | Eye-1 | Minor architecture with a mirror inside it. Darker, intelligent, smoky, emotionally legible. |
| C#m(maj7) | C#EG#C | E1 Light · E10 Dust · E6 Earth · E2 Stone | Stone | Minor architecture with Stone near the return point. Dramatic, inward, elegant, slightly dangerous. |
| C#m7♭5 | C#EGB | E1 Light · E10 Dust · E7 Eye-2 · E3 Eye-1 | Eye-1 | Diminished architecture with perception added. Thinking at the edge of balance. |
| C#dim7 | C#EGA# | E1 Light · E10 Dust · E7 Eye-2 · E4 Water | Water | The Prime square: Light, Water, Peace, Dust. A strange door, symmetrical and slippery. |
What Can You Do With This Map?
First of all, you can use it to listen differently.
Instead of only thinking in tension and resolution, which are useful but can become vague, you can think in Elemental Textures, Temperatures, Facets, and Links. A melody is no longer only going “up” or “down”. It is moving from Light into Stone, or from Fire into Ice, or from Dust back into Vision. A chord is no longer only major or minor. It is a small architecture of Elementals.
You can also use the map to compose.
If you want a melody to feel like it is being pulled into hidden control, lean into Capture. If you want difficult balance, touch Alignment. If you want an almost too-bright field, try Lydian. If you want the song to feel like it is losing ground and crossing the threshold, Locrian is waiting there, probably wearing purple and making things complicated.
This is not meant to replace music theory. Music theory is useful. Musicians spent centuries listening, naming, refining, arguing, and building a very rich language. The Codex does not need to replace that.
The Codex gives another lens.
Hydrogen Music
Obviously, this mapping is mine and it can contain errors. There is no scientific law that says C# must be the home note of music. There is no cosmic police officer forcing orchestras to tune to hydrogen. The Codex is not pretending to be a law of nature in that crude way.
But I did my best to create a universal mapping. Hydrogen is not culturally local. Lyman-alpha is not a Western tradition. Even aliens, if technologically advanced enough, would understand hydrogen.
To tune our songs to the frequency of hydrogen has a deep poetic beauty for me.
It means music begins with the simplest atom.
It means Light becomes sound through octave.
It means the star-frequency enters the body.
It means the Codex can take a photon, fold it forty-three times, and hear the first note of a City.
Crystal Map I: Music.
Not just cute.
It works.
