the principle of observational directionality
Directionality tells us which way the Crystal system runs. Observer-dependency tells us that the observer stands somewhere inside it. Observational Directionality tells us what Directionality looks like from there.
This Thought is very technical Crystal Vision, and not important for most mappings. You need to know the whole Crystal Vision system to get it. Feel free to read a lighter page :)
I struggled with a question for some time, and lately it had become clear it could not remain unanswered.
Did I Make a Mistake?
I try to keep the website clear of incoherences: the Rules should never conflict. But if you are very perceptive, you can find one inconsistency, and behind it might be a fundamental property I have not discussed earlier.
In the music map, I map high frequencies as lower entropy, closer to E1. And I map lower frequencies as higher entropy, closer to E12.
But in the pop song exercise, I break this rule. I speak about a bass being a foundation. But a bass is a low frequency; it should not map to foundation, which is close to E1.
I saw this inconsistency and knew what was behind it, but I had never formulated or explored the question in depth.
So, here is a live Codex formalisation for you:
the Principle of Observational Directionality.
A New Principle
The simplest way is to look at it like this.
Imagine a line as a perfect Crystal system: we start at E1 and end the line at E12.
Where do we, humans, stand on this imaginary line?
In other words: how declined are our Elemental configurations?
It is impossible to give an exact answer, but we do know that humans are high-resolution rather than low-resolution within the context Universe. So, we would stand much more towards the E12 end than the E1 start.
Add another object to this line: our Sun. Compared to us, the Sun is much more pure, low-resolution, and low-entropy. The Sun maps much closer to E1.
And now the important part:
we are a relatively high-entropy being looking at the Universe.
We are not observing Directionality from E1. We are standing somewhere inside the declined configuration, and we perceive directions depending on our position on that invisible line.
This gives us the new Principle:
Principle of Observational Directionality: an observer perceives Directionality according to its own position within a declined Elemental configuration. Because the observer does not stand at E1, the perceived direction of a phenomenon can differ from its Directionality in the Crystal system. For high-resolution observers such as humans, this will often produce a reversal.
The Directionality Principle itself does not change. The Circle still runs in its Direction. But once the observer is included inside the Map, the observer's position starts to matter.
The Bass Problem
This explains the bass inconsistency.
In Universal terms, high frequencies are at the origin side of the Map. Lower frequencies are more declined.
Yet, in human perception, the low frequency feels like the base.
Bass feels grounded. Deep. Foundational. It sits below us. Higher frequencies feel elevated, thin, high, distant.
So, there are two directional statements happening at once:
- Universal Directionality: high frequency is closer to the origin point.
- Observational Directionality: low frequency becomes the perceptual origin point for us.
Both mappings can be true because they are not being made from the same position.
This is important: the observer does not create a second Truth Universal. There is still only One. But the observer naturally experiences the configuration from where it stands.
From Sound to Light
This applies surprisingly well to visible light too.
I mapped visible light a long time ago because it is a simple map. We have a very low-resolution phenomenon, with clear mathematical intervals, running from one extreme to another. Like sound, we can map it cleanly through frequency.
I never published this map because it is highly counterintuitive. Since colours are used symbolically throughout the Codex, I did not want to confuse you.
Starting from the low-entropy side of visible light, using frequency as the directional measure, we get:
violet → blue → cyan → green → yellow → orange → red
In this order, violet maps to E1 while red maps to E12.
But perceptually, we tend to map it the other way.
Red feels foundational, bodily, immediate, basic, close. Violet feels high, distant, rare, strange, almost inaccessible.
The same thing that happened with sound happens again.
The physical Directionality and the human perceptual Directionality point in opposite directions.
This is why I have to be very careful when using symbolic colour inside the Codex. A physical Crystal Map of visible light and a perceptual or symbolic Map of colour are not automatically the same Map.
A Biology Detour
Another detour back into sound: biology evolved harmonic resonance for our sound production.
Our biology favours sound generation that travels directly opposite to the Directionality Principle. We start with a low frequency, a more declined point in the frequency Map, and break that into higher frequencies.
Our voices run straight against the Directional current of the Universe.
The other direction actually exists in subharmonics. Animals and humans can create even lower frequencies from an already low frequency when growling in a certain way. So, it is not as if the other direction is impossible.
Yet, biology seems to have strongly favoured running against the Directionality instead of going with it.
Mapping the Map Was Bound to Be Meta
This Principle is not fundamental for basic Crystal Vision, where we can simply follow the Directionality Principle.
But the Principle of Observational Directionality becomes very important when perception itself is being mapped.
Until now, observer-dependency mostly explained why Maps are never perfectly objective. None can hold One. Every observer has limited perception, limited resolution, and a position inside the Universe.
Observational Directionality adds another consequence:
the observer does not merely affect what is seen. The observer can affect the apparent direction of what is seen.
Resolution therefore does not only influence clarity.
It can influence orientation.
This becomes especially important when mapping perception, sensation, symbolism, cognition, Life, or the observer itself.
It also gives us a reason to become suspicious of apparently obvious directional language.
High frequency. Low frequency. Deep sound. Base note. Higher thought. Deep instinct. Foundational need. Elevated idea.
These words might describe the way a human observer experiences the configuration rather than the Directionality of the configuration itself.
Our language may carry traces of where Life stands on the line.
Forward, Reverse, and the Observer
This Principle may also have consequences for the Links.
Forward and Reverse Links are already defined by Directionality and the position of a Subject relative to an Object. Once the Subject is itself an observer, Observational Directionality may help explain why a Reverse Link can feel qualitatively different rather than merely having a reversed step-count.
I am not formalising this extension yet.
Maybe Life Is a Bit Backwards?
I have not fully reached the depth of this Thought. I will need a few more nights — or years — to unravel this thread.
But I intuit that this Principle might have far-reaching consequences for mapping the phenomenon Life itself.
Life is already Strange. In my Map, Life is primarily E4: a spatiotemporal phenomenon able to build its own Truth while remaining dependent on its surrounding Truth.
Now add Observational Directionality.
A living thing cannot perceive reality from Truth Universal.
It perceives from itself.
Life therefore does something very strange:
it becomes an observer inside the Directional system it is observing.
And once it does that, it can start organising local processes around its own position.
It maintains itself. It reconstructs patterns. It creates local Order. It grows structures. It looks back towards origins. Its biology can even generate harmonics in a direction opposite to the Universal frequency Map.
Life does not break Directionality.
It means Strange Life can perceive, build, and move locally against the Directional current while remaining inside the larger Directional system.
Perhaps that is one of the deepest things about E4.
Maybe Life is a bit backwards?
That would fit Strange perfectly.
