crystal map ii: solar system

Our Solar System can be mapped with Crystal Vision. The map unfolds outward from the Sun through planets, belts, giant systems, ice worlds, and the fuzzy edge beyond Neptune.

A Solar Crystal Map

Our Solar System can be mapped with Crystal Vision. However, unlike music, this map will be less 'perfect'. The assumption of Declining Configurations predicts that a mapping will be more difficult as the thing being map increases in resolution. Music as we mapped it was a relatively low resolution phenomenon: we mapped a linear phenomenon that ran from infinity to infinity. The Solar System is much less universal despite being more cosmic. Here, we have a circular gradient with a fixed starting point, and the whole is not a wavelength, but an embodied physical space made of matter. It would be a bit silly to think that our Solar System is a perfect system -- we're just one out of billions.

This map is not very complicated at first glance. We start with the Sun and move outward. The bodies of the Solar System already form a sequence: central star, rocky inner planets, liquid-water world, red volcanic world, asteroid belt, inclined belt, far dark belt, gas giants, ice giants, and then the fuzzy outer edge.

Solar System map at a glance
Elemental Solar System body Main physical reason
E1 Light Sun Central star, light source, gravitational centre, formation centre.
E2 Stone Mercury First rocky planet, small, dense, close to the Sun, fast orbit and very slow solar day.
E3 Eye-1 Venus Rocky planet covered in a thick reflective atmosphere; brighter and hotter than expected from distance alone.
E4 Water Earth-Moon Dyad Liquid-water Life planet with a large synchronised satellite in its embrace.
E5 Fire Mars Red rocky planet, iron oxides, giant volcanoes, dry surface, two small irregular moons.
E6 Earth Main Belt Organised field of rocky fragments, asteroid families, old planetary material, with Ceres as dwarf planet.
E7 Eye-2 Inclined Belt Belt bodies with strongly inclined orbits; same belt-world, but lifted from the main plane.
E8 Ice Far Belt Outer belt transition toward darker, older, colder, more primitive and volatile-rich material; Hygieia belongs here.
E9 Gold Jovian System Largest planet, hydrogen-helium giant, enormous gravity, storms, and many moons.
E10 Dust Saturnine System Ringed giant, colder and further out, strongly structured by rings and orbital architecture.
E11 Eye-3 Uranus Ice giant with extreme axial tilt, appearing to roll around the Sun.
E12 Void Neptune and beyond Final planet, active outer ice giant, then dwarf planets, Kuiper Belt, scattered disk, and Oort Cloud.

E1 Sun

The Sun is the clear E1 match. It is the central point, the Light source, the gravitational centre, and the spatiotemporal start and end of the Solar System.

It is the start because the planets formed around the young Sun from the same birth cloud and disk. It is the end because the Sun still holds the Solar System together, from the inner planets all the way to the distant outer cloud of icy bodies. In this map, the Sun is not merely one object among others. It is the condition that makes the rest of the map one system.

E1 Light is central, visible, energetic, and primary. The Sun is all of that without much explanation needed.

E2 Mercury

Mercury is the first planet after the Sun. It is small, rocky, dense, and extremely close to the central Light. It has no thick atmosphere to distribute heat, so the side facing the Sun can become extremely hot while the night side becomes extremely cold.

Mercury also has a strange relation between orbit and rotation. It goes around the Sun in about 88 Earth days, but it rotates slowly. A full solar day on Mercury — sunrise to sunrise — lasts about 176 Earth days. So yes, a day is longer than a year, depending on which kind of “day” you mean.

This fits Stone well: the first solid body, close to Light, hard, simple, exposed, and stable in its orbit.

E3 Venus

Venus is also a rocky planet, but now the atmosphere becomes the main feature. It is covered in a thick reflective atmosphere. Despite being farther from the Sun than Mercury, Venus is hotter overall because the atmosphere traps and distributes heat very efficiently.

This is why Venus fits E3. It is still an inner rocky planet, but the surface is no longer the whole story. A surrounding layer changes what the planet is. Venus is bright from Earth, covered from outside, and difficult to read directly beneath the atmosphere.

E3 Eye-1 is not only “seeing”. It is surface, image, information, reflection, message, and the first complication of perception. Venus is a very good planet for that.

E4 Earth-Moon Dyad

Earth is our home, the one and only known liquid-water planet with Life. It is not merely a rocky planet. On the scale of the inner Solar System, Earth is the Water planet.

Watch out: the Codex uses Earth = E6, but planet Earth = E4. Sorry for the confusion, but we really should have called our planet planet Water...

I map this as the Earth-Moon Dyad, not just Earth. The Moon is large relative to Earth compared with many other planetary moons, and it is synchronised with us: the same face always looks toward Earth. This gives the system a strong Embrace quality. Earth is Water and Life; Moon holds the rhythm, tides, night, and reflection around it.

E4 Water is Love, Life, Blue, Pool, River, the First Song. Planet Water and its Moon fit cleanly.

E5 Mars

Mars is another rocky planet, known for its red surface and large volcanoes. The red colour comes mostly from iron oxides in the surface material. The largest volcano, Olympus Mons, rises far higher than Everest and is the largest known volcano in the Solar System.

Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos, but they are small and irregular compared with our Moon.

E5 Fire fits because Mars is red, dry, rocky, volcanic, and visibly marked by old geological heat. It is Fire after Water: not soft, not blue, not full of Life, but still carrying heat, dust, red force, and old eruptions.

E6 Main Belt

After Mars, we do not meet another clean planet. We meet the Main Belt.

The Main Belt is composed of many asteroids and fragments of different sizes. Some are tiny. Some are large enough to become major worlds in their own right. Ceres rules here as the dwarf planet of the belt. Vesta, Pallas, and Hygieia are also among the great bodies of this region.

This fits E6 Earth if we remember that Codex Earth is not “planet Earth”. E6 is Earth as material, knowledge, machine, garden, improvement, workable matter. The Main Belt is not one single rocky body. It is fragments, families, old debris, composition, structure, and material memory of the early Solar System.

The Main Belt is not random dust. It has asteroid families, resonances, composition zones, and large bodies with their own histories. It is a field of matter organised by gravity and time.

E7 Inclined Belt

The Main Belt is under pressure from Jupiter. Some regions are not stable, and asteroids can be moved, disturbed, or flung into different paths because of Jupiter's gravity. Not all belt bodies stay neatly in the same plane.

Some asteroids have strongly inclined orbits. Pallas is the largest and most famous of these. It belongs to the belt, but its orbital plane is tilted strongly compared with the main belt population. Due to this inclination, such bodies are more isolated from the dense flow of the main belt. They belong to the same region, but they do not move through it in the same flat way.

This is why I call this the Inclined Belt. E7 Eye-2 is Peace, Idea, Compass, Clearing, Flat Horizon. The inclined bodies lift out of the main plane where their horizon becomes flat. They separate from the crowd, gain angle, and become harder to fold back into the ordinary belt story.

E8 Far Belt

Closer to the outer edge of the belt, the Solar System changes texture. The asteroids become darker, older, colder, and more primitive in feeling and composition. This is where the map starts leaning toward Ice.

The ice line belongs around this transition. Beyond the inner rocky heat, volatile materials could survive more easily in the early Solar System. The exact history is complicated because the young Solar System moved, heated, cooled, mixed, and migrated, but the principle matters here: past a certain distance, cold chemistry starts becoming much more important.

Hygieia is one of the large bodies in this far, dark belt world. She is a good anchor for E8: old material, darker surface, colder region, less immediate visibility, more preservation.

E8 Ice is the Second Song, Ice Trap, Black, Chaos, Crystal, Cave. In the Solar System map, the Far Belt is where rocky debris begins to feel like preserved shadow.

E9 Jovian System

Jupiter is not just another planet. It is the largest planet, a giant hydrogen-helium world, and more massive than all the other planets combined. It is much closer to a star than to a rocky planet like Mercury, Venus, Earth, or Mars.

Jupiter has enormous influence on the Solar System. Its gravity shapes the asteroid belt, captures and scatters small bodies, and competes with the Sun more than any other planet does in terms of gravitational influence on the rest of the system. It has large storms, including the Great Red Spot, and a harem of moons around it.

E9 Gold fits because Jupiter is sovereign in scale. It is grand, collective, stormy, wise in the old sense of consequence, and almost a system by itself.

E10 Saturnine System

Saturn is smaller than Jupiter, but still enormous. It lies further out and is colder. Its most famous feature is its crisp ring system: a visible architecture of ice, rock, particles, gaps, divisions, and order around the planet.

Saturn also has many moons, but compared with Jupiter, the Saturnine system feels less chaotic and more locked around its main planet. Jupiter is storm, scale, and gravitational dominance. Saturn is limit, ring, structure, and orbit made visible.

This is why Saturn fits E10 Dust. Dust in the Codex is Order, Pyramid, Diamond, World Tree. Saturn is not only a giant planet; it is a giant planet wearing structure.

E11 Uranus

Uranus is an ice giant, smaller and colder than Jupiter and Saturn. It has a pale blue-green colour, faint rings, many moons, and a very strange axis. Its rotation axis is tilted so strongly that the planet seems to roll around the Sun.

This is the key to E11. Uranus is not strange because it is complicated to describe. It is strange because the whole planet is oriented differently. The axis is wrong compared with expectation, and that makes the planet feel visually and geometrically radical.

E11 Eye-3 is Air Current, Vision, Radical, Sky, Crystal Vision. Uranus is the sideways world. That is enough.

E12 Neptune and Beyond

Neptune is the final planet. It is another ice giant, further out than Uranus, but not simply quieter. It has very strong winds, active weather, and a strange magnetic field. It also emits more internal heat relative to what it receives from the Sun, which helps explain why it is more active than distance alone would suggest.

Beyond Neptune, the Solar System stops being a clean sequence of planets. We meet Pluto, other dwarf planets, trans-Neptunian objects, the Kuiper Belt, the scattered disk, and eventually the fuzzy edge of the Oort Cloud. The map becomes less clear, more distant, more difficult to hold.

E12 Void fits because Neptune is the last clean planetary threshold, but not the real end. It points beyond itself. After Neptune, the Solar System dissolves into smaller, colder, stranger, more distant bodies.

What This Map Does

This map can help you understand the Elementals by looking at how they take shape in the Universe on the scale of star systems.

E1 Light becomes the central star. E2 Stone becomes the first rocky planet. E3 Eye-1 becomes a veiled reflective world. E4 Water becomes the liquid-water Life dyad. E5 Fire becomes the red volcanic planet. E6 Earth becomes the organised material belt. E7 Peace becomes the inclined clearing. E8 Ice becomes the far dark preserved belt. E9 Gold becomes the giant sovereign system. E10 Dust becomes the ringed ordered system. E11 Eye-3 becomes the tilted radical world. E12 Void becomes the last planet and the dissolving edge beyond.

This is why Crystal Vision is useful. It does not only label things. It lets different scales speak to each other.

Formation and the Order of Materials

Planet formation in a solar system is relatively straightforward in its broad outline. A star forms from a cloud of gas and dust. Around the young star, a disk of material remains. Within that disk, particles collide, stick, break, gather, heat, cool, and slowly become larger bodies.

The final system depends on the composition of the star's birth cloud, the temperature of the disk, the mass of the star, the amount of gas available, collisions, migration, resonances, and timing. Still, the broad material gradient is understandable. Close to the young Sun, it is hotter, so metals and rocky materials survive more easily. Further out, colder conditions allow ices and volatile materials to persist. Beyond that, large bodies can gather gas and become giant planets if conditions allow.

This is why our Solar System makes sense as a map moving outward: inner rocky worlds, belt material, giant hydrogen-helium systems, ice giants, then distant icy bodies. Crystal Vision does not have to invent that sequence. Astronomy already gives it.

Other Solar Systems

This opens the bigger question: does the Codex only fit our Solar System, or does it apply to other star systems too?

We already know that other planetary systems can look very different from ours. Hot Jupiters exist. These are giant Jupiter-like planets that orbit extremely close to their star, sometimes in a region where our system has Mercury. That is very interesting for the Codex.

One option is that the Codex only fits within our Solar System. This seems unlikely to me, since most of the Codex is derived from more general principles: circle, directionality, division, base-12, inside/outside, texture, temperature, and the way lower resolutions constrain higher ones.

Another option is that our Solar System is in a unique balance state while others are not. Also unlikely. Our system is beautiful, but we already know many stars have different configurations. There is no reason to assume ours is the only balanced one just because it is the one that produced us.

A third option is that other systems have compressed or expanded scales. A close-in giant planet may fill a position that, in our system, is occupied by a small rocky body. The order of Elemental coordinates might still exist, but the distance scale and material expression could shift.

The most interesting option is that reality is a bit bent in other systems.

In our Solar System, E2 is a stable entity represented in stable form: Mercury, the small rocky Stone close to the Sun. In a hot-Jupiter system, E2 might be a giant hot stormy ball of gas. That does not automatically destroy the map. It may mean that the E2 coordinate is filled differently there.

Any civilisation living in such a system might experience stability very differently from us. Their first major planet, their first “Stone” after the star, would not be a small hard rock. It might be huge, volatile, close, hot, and storm-filled. Stability itself would have a different body.

In other words, the architecture of the Codex may stay, but the filling of the textures depends on the system. The coordinate remains. The material expression changes.

This is a philosophical rabbit hole, and it cannot be fully determined until we know much more about other planetary systems. Or until we meet aliens and ask them what their E2 feels like. Which would be very useful, honestly.

Note how the Codex pushes for more science here? Those seeing the Codex as opposed to science have misunderstood both. The more scientific data we get about the world around us, the more precisely our Crystal Maps will cohere.

Closing

Crystal Map II is simple, but not shallow. It shows the Elementals taking shape at planetary scale.

The Solar System is not just a list of planets. It is a structured sequence of bodies, belts, systems, and thresholds moving outward from the Sun. Crystal Vision gives us one way to read that structure.

Sun to Neptune. Light to Void.
