some coins for the crim crimson
Stone, Earth, and Dust: the Dense Texture, real wealth, Idea Stone, Crimson status, and the strange alchemy of matter becoming Order.
Let’s Talk Coins
Let’s talk Coins!
Most of the Thoughts dive into the Strange Texture: Magic, River-Dweller, Ice Trap, Timesight. I guess the Strange Texture obviously deserves a bit more space to be elaborated on. It is weird. It is slippery. It hides in mist and everyone is confused.
The Loose Elementals are also discussed, mostly Eye-3 through Crystal Vision, and Eye-1 implicitly through my lighter tone. Radiant gets its spot mostly in the Crimson essays. But I barely spoke of the Dense Texture.
On the surface, Dense is easiest to grasp. Body. Stone. Money. Health. Work. Tools. Buildings. Systems. The heavy stuff.
But this superficial interpretation hides some very interesting aspects. Dense is not boring. Dense is where reality learns to hold itself.
Here, I will review each Coin and what it represents, both in Crimson and Codex terms.
Stone
In our Crimson Cities, Stone is perhaps almost immediately associated with money. Crimson would have us believe that money is the fundament of your life. Without it, you are not worth much in Crimson eyes.
Yet Stone should absolutely be associated with your material body first.
You can live without money. You cannot live without a body.
Your body is the first Stone. Before bank accounts, before property, before contracts, before wallets, before numbers glowing on a screen, there is this body you received. Skin, bones, organs, hunger, sleep, pain, strength, warmth, exhaustion. The first possession is not something you bought. It is something you woke up inside.
Then, extending further away from the body, Stone also includes possessions.
It is interesting to think about possessions in a psychological sense. How do we feel that we “own” something? It is not literally attached to our body, yet some possessions do feel like that. A home. A coat. A notebook. A ring. A phone. A tool you know by weight. A childhood object you would feel silly defending in public but would still mourn if it disappeared.
When did we first get this idea of “this belongs to me”? It likely has an old animal root. The nest. The den. The sleeping spot. The territory. The food. The mate. The offspring. The small sacred patch of World that says: mine.
Crimson often mocks this as greed when it belongs to the poor, and calls it property when it belongs to the rich.
Then, extending even further outward, Stone can also be something immaterial: skills.
Here we must make a difference between basic skills and crafts. We will see crafts at the Earth Coin. Basic Stone skills are so simple we might easily forget about them: walking, eating, speaking, balancing, grasping, swallowing, breathing correctly enough not to faint dramatically in the supermarket.
A tricky nuance: Stone is not the skills themselves. Stone is the mechanism that makes these skills feel automatic.
You do not think through walking each time you cross a room. You have acquired it. You do not rebuild language from zero every time you speak. You have acquired it. You do not consciously calculate every movement required to bring a fork to your mouth unless something has gone wrong in the Stone.
“Acquisition” is a good noun for Stone because it can be used for both material things and skills. Stone is what has been acquired so deeply that it becomes part of your reality.
Money and Idea Stone
To return to money as Stone: money used to be much closer to Stone in the beginning.
Gold, for example, is almost literally Stone. I mean physical gold here, not the Elemental Gold. Metal has weight. It can be touched. It can be carried, hidden, melted, stolen, buried, guarded, counted. It shines, but it is still matter. Very expensive shiny matter, but matter nonetheless.
Since 1971 AD, or 2724 AUC, money is totally decoupled from anything material. Money still functions as Stone in the Crimson City, but by decoupling its value from something tangible, money became more Eye-2 in nature. Something Loose. An Idea. A Peace product. A shared agreement pretending to be a rock.
Money always flirted with Eye-2 nature, but in the past it was at least grounded into Stone. Today, it is really an idea in its essence.
Idea Stone.
This is not me saying money is fake in the childish sense. If rent is due, the landlord will not accept a lecture on metaphysics. Money is real because the City makes it real. But that is exactly the point: it is a social spell so powerful that it can buy food, land, labour, medicine, comfort, safety, time, art, bodies, silence, influence, and sometimes a very ugly chair that costs more than a village library.
People with a lot of real Stone are made to feel small by the people with a lot of Idea Stone.
The silliest thing is that money can displace real Stone. You do not need to learn if you can buy everything. You do not need to cook if someone cooks for you. You do not need to repair if you can replace. You do not need to know your neighbours if every service arrives at the door. You do not need to carry your body well if every discomfort can be outsourced until the body starts sending louder invoices.
Maybe the rich ones are really poor.
Earth
The Earth Coin takes the Stone Coin and makes it better.
It looks at all the details and refines them. This is why we map Earth to health, complexity, and higher skill acquisition.
Stone gives you a body. Earth keeps it healthy and productive.
Stone gives you possessions. Earth makes them more functional.
Stone gives you the skill of eating. Earth turns it into gourmet cooking.
Stone is relatively brutish, like a hammer. Earth refines the tool into a complex machine.
In line with its Terminal Temperature, Earth is much less material than Stone. This is a bit of a paradox for a Dense Elemental. Earth is the least material of the three Coins.
Stone says: here is the thing.
Earth says: yes, but could the thing be better?
Health is Earth because it is not merely the possession of a body. It is the refinement, repair, maintenance, and intelligent organisation of the body. Craft is Earth because it is not merely owning a tool. It is knowing how to use it well. Technique is Earth because it turns basic acquisition into applied improvement.
Earth is the Coin that notices the loose screw and then cannot stop seeing loose screws everywhere. Blessing and curse. Mostly curse at dinner parties.
Earth Intelligence
Earth can also be associated with what Crimson calls “intelligence”.
The Codex would argue for a much broader definition of intelligence. In fact, any Elemental is a type of intelligence. Light has intelligence. Water has intelligence. Fire has intelligence. Ice has intelligence. Even Dust, sitting there looking stern and geometrical, has intelligence.
Earth rules the analytical kind.
It helps us solve puzzles. Think of the Capture Link. It finds the missing variable. It provides contextual organisation. It asks what is not working, what could be improved, what part does not fit, what assumption is broken, what mechanism is hidden under the surface.
The other side of this type of intelligence is the typical worrying, overthinking, and critical evaluation. Too much Earth can make you very unpleasant to be around.
Earth would probably respond that without critique nothing would ever improve.
And it would be right.
Even if Earth maps onto our typical idea of intelligence, reducing Earth to an IQ test would be a grave undervaluation of its nature. Earth is diagnosis, repair, craft, medicine, engineering, cooking, training, contextual thinking, technique, maintenance, critique, and the annoying question that saves everyone later.
Crimson has a habit of stripping the beauty out of things.
It takes intelligence, this huge Earth force of refinement and problem-solving, and squashes it into grades, productivity, prestige, credentials, numbers, rankings, tests, and little certificates that say congratulations, you are now allowed to feel superior in a socially approved font.
Earth deserves better.
Dust
Dust is where we really zoom out.
We are no longer in the “now”. We move to an idea of “forever”.
Crimson would sell you Dust as the idea of status, career achievement, Nobel prizes, fame, monuments, follower counts, magazine articles, impressive biographies, and those LinkedIn posts where someone announces humility in twelve paragraphs.
All hollow interpretations.
The owner of a restaurant in a small village might own more Dust than a rich banker.
Think of all the happy nights he•she organised. The first dates of teenagers in there. The children born out of the union of people who met by accident in that restaurant. The old people who came every week and felt seen. The workers who laughed in the kitchen. The birthdays. The tears. The gossip. The arguments. The reconciliations. The meals that became memory.
That is Dust.
Dust is not merely “being remembered”. It is the structure that remains because something real was ordered well enough to keep echoing.
A person can have Dust without fame. A small place can hold more Dust than a skyscraper. A teacher can carry more Dust than a celebrity. A grandmother can hold more Dust than a minister. A song sung to one child at the right moment can have more Dust than an anthem shouted into a stadium.
Dust is much more complex than Crimson statues.
Dream Big!
I want to push hard against Crimson here.
It says “dream big!” with a happy poster smile.
I answer “nonsense” with a happier poster smile.
No, but really.
The Codex is not anti-greatness. Greatness can be beautiful. A great work, a great life, a great discovery, a great City, a great act of Love, a great piece of Order: yes, obviously. Dreaming is not the enemy. The Codex would be a very strange thing if it hated dreams. Gold and Purple would file a complaint immediately.
But Crimson rarely means greatness when it says “dream big”. Crimson means inflate. Scale. Perform ambition. Become visible. Build a brand. Conquer the room. Outperform the neighbour. Turn your Life into a motivational advertisement with teeth.
Social media makes us feel small, then sells us expansion as healing.
Dust does not want follower counts or magazine articles.
Dust wants Order.
Order is made out of Truth, Love, and Peace.
That restaurant owner really has more Dust in their pockets than the banker who never left his rooftop to touch the world.
Crimson measures the height of the Tower. Dust asks what the Tower holds.
Crimson asks how many people saw you. Dust asks what remained after you passed through.
Crimson asks whether the dream was big. Dust asks whether it was true.
The Three Coins Together
Stone, Earth, and Dust are not three names for the same kind of “value”. They are three movements of Dense reality.
- Stone is acquisition. The body. The possession. The automatic capacity. The thing that has become part of your reality.
- Earth is refinement. Health. Craft. Analysis. Repair. Improvement. The thing becoming more functional, more complex, more alive through skill.
- Dust is Order. Continuity. Legacy. Structure beyond the self. The thing becoming part of a larger pattern that can outlast the moment.
Crimson collapses them into money, productivity, and status.
The Codex restores them as body, refinement, and lasting Order.
This is why the Dense Texture matters. Without Dense, Magic floats away. Love cannot be housed. Fire cannot be directed. Vision cannot be built. Peace cannot be protected. A dream with no Stone becomes mist. A dream with no Earth becomes incompetence. A dream with no Dust becomes a private sparkle that dies the moment the room changes light.
Final Thoughts
I want to end this Thought on the mystery of the Dense Texture, Stone especially.
There is something almost alchemical about Stone. It is the Elemental that converts pure Light into matter. It is the first miracle of Dense reality: the fact that anything can be held at all.
Light shines. Stone keeps.
Without Stone, there is no body to love, no hand to hold, no home to return to, no tool to refine, no skill to acquire, no food to eat, no wound to heal, no object to pass down, no world sturdy enough for the rest of the Circle to dance inside.
Stone is easy to underestimate because it is so close. You notice Magic because it surprises you. You notice Fire because it burns. You notice Ice because it traps. You notice Air because it moves. Stone is already there, quietly making all noticing possible.
That is the mystery of the Coins.
Real wealth begins with a body.
Real intelligence refines what the body has acquired.
Real legacy leaves Order made of Truth, Love, and Peace.
Don't lose those Coins, Earthborn.
