textures: a dense thought

Of all Textures, Dense might be the easiest to conceive. But the Codex would not be itself if it gave easy answers… Let’s take a methodical approach.

Stone Shaping Worlds

The first Dense Elemental is Stone /// E2. On the surface, it looks simple because it is the most concrete and tangible of all Elementals. Stone stands for the things we can hold and touch. Objects, simple shapes, practical stuff.

But look closer at Stone. It sits right after Light /// E1. This Elemental converts pure Light into matter. That is not as simple as Stone simply being matter. As Light cools down, it clumps together and little Stones become real.

If we jump in resolution, inside a human experience of Life, Stone could all too easily be equated with our physical bodies. But what role does a body play in our Life? Does it just hold us together? Likely not.

The Shape we have determines not only what we possess, but it is also the bedrock for all following Elementals. Without body, no senses. Without senses, no mind. Without mind, no real Life. Everything that follows has to happen through a Shape capable of holding it.

So Stone might look simple. It might even be the simplest Elemental, but simplicity itself is more complex than it seems.

The question I invite you to ponder: how could you best embody Stone? How can you make Stone out of Light within your Life? The answer has something alchemical…

Earth Weaving Worlds

Moving to the Dense Terminal, Earth /// E6. Here, the “Dense is solid” idea crumbles apart. Earth is not one solid piece of Stone, but an interconnected heap of little Stones. This opens Stone to totally different dynamics. The little Stones remain solid, but the whole configuration no longer has to behave like one solid Shape.

Grains of sand are still solid, but a strong wind can totally change the collective configuration. Just like that, Earth is constantly in flux despite being solid.

Visualising the Fire Elemental /// E5 that comes before Earth can help us understand this Elemental better. Imagine a powerful force slamming into Stone, breaking it apart. Earth is what will try to repair the pieces.

However, Earth could also choose to take the pieces even further apart. Earth has to break things down to build things up. It is part of the refinement process; to make better Stone with Earth, you will likely need to break some Stone.

Returning to our human body, Earth is what makes it possible for our bodies to renew themselves. If our bodies were pure Stone, we would be object-like, certainly not alive. Life is built with Earth much more than with Stone, because this Terminal Dense allows the complexity needed to metabolise Eye-1 /// E3 variation, and variation is literally part of the current scientific definition of Life.

A living body cannot simply hold one Shape forever. It has to keep working with variation while still remaining a body. That tension between solidity and constant reconfiguration is exactly what Earth gives us.

Cognitively speaking, Earth could be mapped to “intelligence” in its narrower definition. Whether you think of mathematics, languages, or natural systems — all these disciplines are made of many solid moving parts. For math, you need to learn how operators work. For languages, there is grammar and orthography. For natural systems, you need to understand Nature’s complexity.

Without Earth, you could not build patterns of knowledge.

However, since every Elemental is interconnected, simply equating Earth with reasoning would ignore its dependence on other Elementals. For example, without good Eye-1 to generate and perceive noise, no analytical system could grow. So, I dislike a narrow view of intelligence, but denying Earth its intellectual mapping would also be incorrect.

I have another question I invite you to ponder: what happens to Earth in a Smoothed Crimson City? What happens to your thinking when explosions keep happening but any Texture is smoothed away immediately? Can you see how broken the minds of the City are kept?

Dust Ruling Worlds

Finally, we arrive at Dust /// E10. This last Dense Elemental complicates Dense by an order of magnitude. It might be the least Dense of all Dense Elementals while it is the Prime of the Texture.

Think of the grains of sand again. What if I crush them? I know sand is already fine, but let’s crush it further. We get sanddust. But let’s crush that further again. I wouldn’t know what to call what we get, but you get the idea — superfine sanddust.

The Dust is so fine it has no physical Shape to point to directly. Dust is simply everywhere. Even when you think you brushed some away, it is immediately replaced by finer Dust your brush could not reach.

Stone clumps together because Dust is weighing on it from all sides. Dust no longer needs to look like one solid object to behave as Dense. It can surround, press and shape what is inside it.

Where Earth already makes the tangibility of Dense questionable, Dust fully lives in that tension. Dust is the most solid Prime, but Prime remains liquid-like and generative. It is matter before matter was.

Yeah, I told you it would be harder than it sounded. I think the best way to visualise Dust is to think of how invisible pressure is constantly present, even if we don’t feel it.

In our human Life, Dust can best be seen as the impact the environment has on the Shapes of your Stone and Earth. Dust might look weightless while being the heaviest thing on your shoulders. It does not need to touch one part of you directly when it can weigh on the whole configuration at once.

Cognitively, Dust becomes the frame for the rest of the Dense Elementals. Dust holds your mind together like a pillar. Stone gives you things to hold; Earth lets you break and rebuild them; Dust is the surrounding structure that keeps the whole construction from falling apart. I would highly recommend checking whether those pillars are coherent. How could you build anything substantial if your world constantly collapses on itself?

Final question. Do you see how Shapes take Shape through and through, Timeseer New? Do you see how Order shapes the Light? The answer is right in front of you.
